This article covers the definition of a domain. also, you will find information on how you can buy the domain name for your website. Moreover, we have also explained the different types of domain names and their importance for our website.

What is a Domain name?

The domain name is a unique id of the website, that is used to identify the website. which is known by numbers called IP addresses. An IP address is used to connect data to the servers.

IP is also a domain but it is quite hard to remember and difficult to use.

Therefore, it is rather used in the form of words. The domain is a URL but it is the main identity of the website.

How to buy a Domain Name?

Unfortunately claiming a domain name is not free. you must have to buy it from the respective domain registrar. Here are some tips for you to buy a domain name.

How does Domain Work?

A domain name works by being the shortcut to the server that hosts your website. Without a domain name, it’s not possible to access any website because you need to enter the full IP address. It is very hard to remember for anyone who wanted to visit your website.

For Instance, IP Address: https//192.168.0.1/ is the domain of the TP-link router and kunwarlab.com is the domain of my blog. Here you can understand IP is also the domain but it is hard to remember my blog domain is in the word format so it is very easy to remember.

Domains can also use redirects, which essentially permit you to specify that if people visit your domain, they’re automatically forwarded to another. This can be useful when you need to redirect people to the landing pages on your main site. For example, if you visit www.fb.com, you’ll be forwarded to www.facebook.com.

Why Are Domain Names So Important?

The domain name is like an address of our home where you need our home address to find our home location. In the same way, a domain is necessary to locate our website on the web internet. It is the pathway for people to visit your website and learn more about your business and purchase your products and services.

the domain builds your brand by creating a strong image for your business. A domain name gives your business instant reliability and puts you in the same online marketplace as your largest competitors.

It says that you mean business and help online shoppers and customers see you as a forward-thinking company that is conveniently accessible online.

What are the types of the domain?

1. Top-Level Domains

Top-level domains reserved a place at the top of the internet authority of domain names. Keep in mind that when you’re choosing a top-level domain for your domain, you’ll want to choose one that’s in alignment with, or enhances, your brand and overall domain.

Just because a particular TLD is available, it doesn’t mean you should register it.

There are several types of the domain but here I’m listing some of the most used top-level domains.

.com

This is an open Top-level domain. Any organization or person has permission to use it. This is the most widely used domain and is used by all types of entities like schools, private firms, small organizations, etc.

.net

This is also an open top-level domain. any person or entity is authorized to join this. this is normally used by internet service providers.

.org

This is also an open top-level domain. These types of domains are mainly used by an organization.

.edu

These types of domains are limited to use by education institutes, schools, colleges, and universities only.

.gov

These types of domains are limited to us government entities and other authorized government states and countries.

2. Country Code Top Level Domains

Next, on the list, we have country code top-level domains (ccTLD). As the name implies, THese domains are specially matched up with different countries. Each country has its own ccTLD, It doesn’t mean you have to use it only because you leave in that country.

You can use this domain extension when you actually want to drive traffic from that specific country. For instance, if you want to receive traffic from the US, it is better to use the ‘.us’ extension, while companies from Nepal can use the ‘.np’ extension.

3. Generic Top-Level Domains

Next, The generic top-level domain means that these are particularly used for specific purposes only.

Let’s look at an example. Military organizations can use the ‘.mil’ extension, while educational institutions can use the ‘.edu,’ and ‘.org’ is intended for use by non-profit organizations.

A lot of gTLDs can be registered even if you don’t satisfy the requirements, but for some like ‘.mil’ and ‘.edu’ you must fit the requirements. You can see the full list of available gTLDs here current gTLDs that are available to register

4. Second-Level Domains

In the Domain Name System hierarchy, a second-level domain is a domain that is directly below a top-level domain. For example, in kunwarlab.com, kunwarlab is the second-level domain of the .com TLD.

There are also country code second-level domains, which might look like the following:

  • .co.np – Companies in Nepal commonly use this.
  • .gov.np– This is used by government agencies in Nepal.
  • .gov.us– Government agencies across the United States use this.

5. Third Level Domains

thirdlevel domain is the next highest level after the second-level domain in domain name hierarchy. They aren’t a full domain name in and of themselves, but merely a portion of a domain name. The thirdlevel domain is often called a “subdomain” and includes a third domain section to the URL.

For example, in the domain name “www.kunwarlab.com,” ‘www’ would be the third-level domain. Or, if you’re using a subdomain to build an additional section of your site, this would be a third-level domain as well.

The purpose of using the third domain are various but here I have listed some of the most known purposes. I’m taking an example of my own website www.kunwarlab.com.

  • Adding a blog. You can host your blog on a subdomain like ‘blog.kunwarlab.com,’ to create a separate content hub.
  • Creating a resource section. If you have a resource like a tutorial or help section, then you can use ‘help.kunwarlab.com.’
  • Hosting an app. If you have a web-based app, you can use a subdomain like ‘app.kunwarlab.com.’
  • Creating an online store. If you have an online store then you can use a subdomain like ‘store.kunwarlab.com’.
