There are two types of system on canon cameras, the first one is DSLR which includes the EF lens series and EF-S lens series, and the new technology which might be the future of all the camera companies is the mirrorless system.
Canon mirrorless technology offers EF-M lenses and RF lenses which are ridiculously good but at the same time quite expensive as well.
Canon Camera Mount Types
1. Canon EF Mount System Cameras
If you look for the EF lens mount, It is the standard lens mount on the Canon EOS family of SLR film and digital cameras.
EF stands for “Electro-Focus” The automatic focusing on EF lenses is handled by a dedicated electric motor built into the lens. Mechanically, it is a bayonet-style mount, and all communication between the camera and lens takes place through electrical contacts; there are no mechanical levers or plungers. The mount was first introduced in 1987.
2. Canon RF Mount System Cameras
The Canon RF lens mount is the latest mount system from canon. It’s an interchangeable lens mount developed by Canon for its full-frame mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras like the latest Canon R6 and Canon R5 but The first featured canon RF camera was Canon EOS R, followed by the EOS RP which is the cheapest canon RF lens camera with a full-frame mount system. The RF mount was announced in September 2018.
The RF mount allows for the use of Canon EF and EF-S mount lenses using one of three Canon-made Lens Adapters.
3. Canon EF-M Mount System Cameras
The Canon EF-M lens mount is a crop mount system for the EOS-M camera like very popular Canon M-50. It is introduced in 2012, is a derivative of the Canon EF lens mount designed for use with the Canon EOS M mirrorless interchangeable lens camera.
The EF-M lens mount is one of Canon’s two new systems for mirrorless cameras, the other being the RF mount.
The M system has an 18 mm flange focal distance (compared to 44 mm for EF and EF-S) and a 47 mm throat diameter (compared to 54 mm for EF and EF-S). As it is designed for use with an APS-C-sized image sensor, it features the same crop factor (of roughly 1.6) as the existing EF-S lens mount.
4. Canon EF-S Mount System Cameras
The Canon EF-S lens mount comes from the EF lens mount created for a subset of Canon digital single-lens reflex cameras with APS-C-sized image sensors. It was released in 2003. Cameras with the EF-S mount are backward compatible with the EF lenses and, as such, have a flange focal distance of 44.0 mm.
Only Canon cameras released after 2003 with APS-C sized sensors support the EF-S mount like Canon Rebel series camera (Canon t3i t4i t5i, Canon t4, t5, Canon Sl2, and more).
The “S” in EF-S has variously been described by Canon as coming from either “Small image circle” (the lens projects a smaller image circle than normal EF lenses to match the sensor), or “Short back focus” (the smaller mirror used in APS-C cameras also allows optical elements to protrude further into the camera body, reducing the minimum distance between the sensor and the back element of the lens).
The EF-S mount can be made smaller, lighter (containing less glass), faster (larger aperture), and more importantly less expensive.
It is hard to decide the best Canon camera from the list that Canon DSLR and Mirrorless System offers. So here we have listed the Canon DSLR and Mirrorless cameras to assist you to pick the best camera to depend on the budget you have and choices you like.
